OVERVIEW

Permit fly fishing on the Yucatán, done in style.

At Mayazul Lodge, you’ll fish the world-class flats of Punta Allen — one of the most productive Permit fisheries on the peninsula. From the moment you arrive, the focus is on giving you a smooth, well-run experience both on and off the water. Each day, you’ll head out with skilled local guides in modern skiffs, scanning the shallow flats for black tailed devils waiting for the moment to make your cast. While Permit are the main target, Bonefish, Tarpon and other species show up often enough to keep things exciting and give you a real shot at a saltwater slam.

Back at the lodge, everything is set up to help you unwind and recharge. The atmosphere is casual but dialed-in, with a focus on comfort, good food, and thoughtful service. If you’re chasing your first Permit or returning with unfinished business, Mayazul gives you the setting, support, and access to focus fully on what you came for — great fishing in one of Mexico’s most exciting saltwater zones.

ACCOMMODATION

Mayazul Lodge is an intimate beachfront retreat designed for serious anglers who appreciate comfort and style. With just four en-suite rooms—each featuring two queen beds, air conditioning, and ocean views—the lodge offers a tranquil setting nestled within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

The main lodge boasts inviting communal spaces, including a dining room, lounge, fly-tying desk, onsite fly shop, and an open bar. Outdoor porches and a fire pit provide additional spots to relax and share stories after a day on the flats.

Culinary experiences at Mayazul are a highlight, with a daily à la carte menu showcasing fresh, locally sourced dishes, particularly seafood. Lunches are custom-prepared picnics, enjoyed on the water.

Guests benefit from thoughtful amenities such as daily housekeeping, Wi-Fi, and access to premium fly-fishing gear at no extra cost. With boats picking up directly in front of the lodge, your fishing adventure begins just steps from your door.

THE FISHING

At Mayazul Lodge, you’ll fish the heart of Ascension Bay, one of the most consistent and exciting places in the world to chase Atlantic Permit on the fly.

Permit are the focus — smart, abundant, and found across a mix of open flats, channels, and mangrove edges. You’ll fish from classic pangas with a senior and junior guide, giving you full support on every shot.

There’s steady action from Bonefish and juvenile Tarpon too, as well as other species such as Cuda, Atlantic Triggers, Jacks and more. Around mid-year, large migratory Tarpon move into the bay — offering big fish opportunities when the timing lines up.

8 to 10 wt rods are the go-to, with floating lines covering the majority of situations. For more details on setup and fly selections, just reach out — we’re happy to guide you through what works best.

Boats leave straight from the lodge.

GETTING THERE
Man on Parashute.png

Mayazul Lodge is located in the quiet fishing village of Punta Allen, deep within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

To get there, you’ll fly into either Cancun International Airport (CUN) or Tulum International Airport (TQO). Tulum is roughly an hour closer, but both airports offer direct connections from the U.S., Mexico City, and other international hubs.

After landing, you’ll join a shared shuttle with the rest of the week’s guests. The journey begins with a 2-hour drive to the reserve entrance, followed by a 1-hour panga boat ride through the lagoon — a scenic stretch of water filled with birdlife, mangroves, and prime Permit habitat. Once you reach Punta Allen, it’s just a quick 5-minute vehicle ride to the lodge.
