EARLY RISERS TRAVEL
OVERVIEW
Established in 1984, Kau Tapen Lodge is the world’s first fishing lodge on the Rio Grande. A sea-run brown trout fly fishing paradise. This legendary destination offers anglers an exclusive fly fishing experience on the Rio Grande, known for its exceptional sea run brown trout population as well as access to one of its tributaries, the Rio Menendez. With its blend of rustic charm and modern comfort, Kau Tapen provides a welcoming atmosphere where guests can unwind after a rewarding day with professional guides on the river.

Kau Tapen Lodge offers elegant, cozy comfort in the heart of Tierra del Fuego. With just ten guest rooms — each en-suite and furnished with a king, queen, or two double beds — you’ll have the space and privacy to relax fully between sessions on the river. The rooms open to views of the sweeping Patagonian steppe, and the lodge itself is designed around comfort, warmth, and understated style.
Communal spaces include a spacious lounge with a fireplace, a well-stocked bar, and a spa area complete with jacuzzi, sauna, and Finnish steam bath — perfect for unwinding after a cold day on the Río Grande. In true Nervous Waters fashion, the dining is exceptional: gourmet meals built around fresh, regional ingredients, fine Argentine wines, and of course, an asado or two — fire-grilled meats prepared with care and shared in good company.
There’s also a dedicated wading room and fly-tying area, along with a small on-site shop for any essentials you may have forgotten.

THE FISHING
Targeting the legendary sea-run Brown Trout of the Rio Grande is something many anglers dream of. With expert guides leading the way, the chance of an unforgettable catch looms with every cast.
At Kau Tapen Lodge, the average size of fish is 7lb, but monsters of over 30lbs are found lurking in the waters. As a guest at the lodge, you gain access to 22km of the Rio Grande as well as access to 20km of a tributary, the Rio Menendez.
An expert team of guides is there to lead the way, 1 guide per 2 guests. Pick-up occurs after breakfast at the lodge, where a short 4X4 journey gets you to the water. After a morning session, lunch takes place at the lodge, with a little siesta, and then you head back out for the afternoon session.
With Stephan having spent a solid chunk of his career here, there is no better person in the world to provide expert advice on fishing these waters.
7-9wt rods, single and double handers are your go to.
